Working Principle of Wireless Modules: FM Modulation, Transmitter & Receiver Operation

Working Principle of Wireless Modules

1. Introduction

Wireless modules fall into two categories: analog transmission and digital transmission. Analog modules are obsolete in most modern applications. Today, digital wireless modules dominate, enabling the transmission of audio, video, text, and data over various networks such as Wi‑Fi, BLE, GPS, 4G, and 5G.

This article explains the working principle of digital wireless modules using frequency modulation (FM) as the underlying RF technique.

2. Modulation Method – Frequency Modulation (FM)

FM encodes information by varying the carrier frequency according to the modulating signal, while keeping the carrier amplitude constant. This provides better noise immunity than amplitude modulation (AM).

FM is widely used in FM broadcasting, walkie‑talkies, mobile phones, and many wireless modules. Key characteristics of an FM modulator include:

  • Frequency deviation – how far the carrier shifts

  • Linearity – accuracy of frequency change

  • Low parasitic AM – minimal unwanted amplitude variation

3. Transmitter Operation

Once the module is powered on, the transmitter follows these steps:

  1. RF IC Reset – The RF chip resets and stabilizes.

  2. Register Initialization – The microcontroller configures operating frequency, output power, data rate, and bandwidth.

  3. Load Data – The data frame is written into the transmit FIFO.

  4. Transmit – The module enters TX mode; the RF IC modulates and radiates the signal.

  5. Complete – After sending the frame, the module signals completion and returns to idle.

Transmit flow: MCU → Register config → FIFO → RF modulator → PA → Antenna

4. Receiver Operation

The receiver shares the same initialization steps, then listens for incoming signals:

  1. RF IC Reset – Same as transmitter.

  2. Register Initialization – Matching frequency, data rate, and bandwidth with the transmitter.

  3. Enter RX Mode – The module monitors the channel.

  4. Wait for Interrupt – When a valid frame arrives, the RF IC triggers an interrupt.

  5. Read Data – The microcontroller reads the received data from the RX FIFO.

Receive flow: Antenna → LNA → RF demodulator → FIFO → MCU

5. Conclusion

Understanding the fundamental transmit/receive sequence and FM modulation helps engineers select and integrate wireless modules effectively. Modern modules add advanced features (error correction, frequency hopping, etc.), but the core principle remains digital data transmission over an RF carrier.
